Permaculture is a design science based on observation of the natural world that utilizes materials, methods, and ethics based on nature. This is the main paradigm that John uses in his design work. What to Expect in the Design Process, from John:

I look at the property on google maps. All the maps are set up on a North/South grid. I use this to determine the amount of large trees, buildings, etc shading the property as well as the sunniest place for the garden and orchard and shadier places for forest understory plants, animal systems, mushroom logs, and relaxation from the summer heat.
I use zone planning for efficiency within the design. Different zones are distinguished based on the amount of visits per year that the elements within that zone require. For example, if you keep chickens for eggs you have to go to their coop to feed them and collect eggs daily- we want to put that close to where daily activities take place. Likewise plants that need intermittent care can be much further away, such as chestnut trees.
We identify all the features you want (see below) in relation to human traveling and structures: paths, driveways, sidewalks, greenhouse, pergola, shed, etc., and plan to place them accordingly.
