Arrowroot Plant
Many gardeners grow Canna lilies but few are aware that there is an edible rooted species in the genus. Achira grows at lower elevation in the Andes it is also known as, “arrowroot” and is an important starch producing crop that has a long history of industrial and culinary use across the world. It can yield more than potatoes per unit area and has a very neutral taste in comparison. This plant is hardy to zone 7 and while it will make it through some Ohio winters its best to dig it up in the fall and replant in the spring like ornamental Canna lilies.
