Native to highlands in China and India, shiso is an important ingredient in East and Southeast Asian cuisine. Red shiso is used in the preservation of umeboshi plums, giving them their red color. It is traditionally eaten with sushi and sashimi as well as generally as a basil substitute. Can become weedy in disturbed areas, forming patches over time.
