This native plant has been used by native people all over the world. Highly aromatic roots and foliage have been chewed as a stimulant and to ease digestive woes. Powdered roots were used to protect stored grains from insect pests and fleas from pets.
Sweet flag is a wetland plant which grows in moist soil as well as submerged in a ditch or a pond, it helps to reduce phosphate in bodies of water (decreasing algae) as well as increasing water clarity and oxygen levels. Its a great plant for the wetland or heavy wet soils of Northeastern Ohio.
