This native woodland perennial needs some shade or protection from the sun in the heat of the day. Quite beautiful with purple flowers and small purple fruit it is a magnet for birds in the fall and insects while in bloom. Also in the same family as ginseng the young shoots have been eaten cooked as well as the roots which were a traditional ingredient in ‘root beer’ having a liquorice-like flavor. Not common in the nursery trade.
